Hyojun Akitas was established in 1978. We are located near the central coast of California, are licensed with Monterey county as a private kennel and breed only Akitas. Over the past 2½ decades, we have actively shown our Akitas in American Kennel Club, Canadian Kennel Club, International, and Mexican confirmation shows. Our accomplishments include two Register of Merits, two Best In Specialty Show winners, multiple Award of Merit, Working Group, Best of Breed, Best Stud Dog, Best Veteran, Best Brace, and Best of Opposite Sex winners and have produced and finished over 20 champions. We have also had a "Top-20" male and female, a "Top-5" female, #1 brood bitch, and #3 stud dog.
Over the years we have established a reputation for producing soundness in structure, movement and temperament. Health and temperament are important to us, we screen for hips, eyes and thyroid and over 80% of our current breeding stock is rated OFA excellent. For the past several years we have been doing puppy temperament testing at 7 weeks, this has helped to better match our puppies with their potential homes.
Overall, we prefer the heavier-boned American style Akita, however we have done a few breedings with the blended Japanese-American Akitas, and were very pleased with the results. We prefer to have an overall consistently high quality litter, rather than a single outstanding puppy. Success is evident with the improved quality of each generation.
